In wanting to add something new to the site coupled with my affinity for soul music thought I’d start a new series of posts that I’ve decided to call Soul On ICE. With that I can only lead it off with “Just To Keep You Satisfied” by Marvin Gaye. A favorite of mine not only for it’s beauty but also it’s story.
Originally written & co-written as a love ballad for Motown groups The Originals and The Monitors in 1969 by Marvin and then wife Anna Gordy Gaye (sister of Motown founder Berry Gordy and whom Marvin married when he was 24 and she 42), the songs lyrics like it’s authors relationship changed in the ensuing years as the celebrity couple’s marriage would eventually end in divorce. “Just To Keep You Satisfied” would go on to see it’s official release not on The Originals nor The Monitors albums but rather Marvin’s classic multi-platinum selling 1973 album Let’s Get It On as a beautifully sung but sad musical autobiography if you will of Marvin & Anna’s failed marriage.
Several covers were recorded most notably by Howard Hewitt, Kenny Lattimore & Lisa Stansfield and the song would even be resurrected on the Baby Boy soundtrack and in a scene from the movie reintroducing it to this generation and proving unlike it’s subject, a true classic withstands the test of time – ICE
