“Bonsoir” is how Cormega, the veteran underground mc & friend greeted me when we spoke yesterday. Knowing that I’m of Haitian decent and having just gotten back from Haiti that day himself, the QB legend hit me with a “good evening” in Creole, Haiti’s native tongue. As mentioned here Monday via Mega’s own first day account of the island, he along with Styles P & Immortal Technique visited Haiti once known as Hispaniola to perform at a free benefit concert just 5 months after an earthquake nearly wiped out the entire capital of Port-Au-Prince leaving over 250,000 people dead. During our conversation Mega would go on to tell me about his experience with the people, food, meeting Wyclef & Haitian born old school Hip Hop producer Herbie Luv Bug (of Salt-N-Pepa & Kid-N-Play fame) amongst other things that I’ll let him tell courtesy of a four day journal kept during his trip along with a bevy of pictures.

Haiti: Day One
As soon as I got off the plane the first thing I noticed was the temperature was like 90 degrees. I took off my sweat shirt immediately walked out the airport and reality was right there. The eyes don’t lie and some of the eyes I saw spoke of pain hunger and desperation. Young kids come to the gate asking for money adults do also. As I reached in my pocket {from vehicle} people swarmed to the car and when it was all gone there was one kid left I felt bad for him but he redeemed himself when the next vehicle pulled up. As we drove away I saw UN trucks not many but they were present. The thing that fucked me up was the tents and shacks people are living in I don’t think I saw this on the news. I also saw armed security at stores and gas stations. I saw my share of guns in my life but when you see a machine gun wielding man at a gas station its gets your attention.
One thing I will say about Haiti the people are strong they will rebound the resiliency of these people make me proud of my roots no I’m not Haitian but I could’ve been if the slave ship of my ancestors landed there instead of America. Haitians are children of Africa just as we African Americans are except they know there roots and we confused niggas try to separate ourselves from our ancestry.
Let’s get back on topic we drove on streets that would ruin you tires and as I type this the whole car is shaking I saw so much ruins that if rubble was worth money these people would all be rich the poor suffer the most the upper class areas still have some functioning establishments we went to one ate and watched soccer {that’s a first for me } it was nice white people and black people mingled freely together not the fake shit we see in our everyday lives I was pleasantly surprised by this after we ate we came to the place where we will be staying at its a mansion once owned by the president in the 1940s and this shit may make Obama want to upgrade. The rooms are ok they are comfortable and the atmosphere is relaxing I wrote a lot a rhymes being here. We decide to take a short rest which turns into long sleep but I’m tired I don’t mind. After I wake up I get fresh{as usual ask about me}and we head to a radio event its packed but it was an eye opening event when people all sang we are the world it was some thing that you’d have to see yourself to fully appreciate. After that we leave and head to a studio and vibe with local Haitian rappers it was hot as tobasco sauce but it was cool I ain’t never been Hollywood and they seem to like that about me they offered me some food which looked good but I don’t eat pork so we leave and I had fish and it was good real good after I go to room and its lights out !
Haiti: Day 2
Woke up today feeling blessed glad to be here glad that I can travel the globe off the strength of my thoughts I’m hungry Mario {not the singer} knocks on my door to tell me breakfast is ready best news I heard all day the orange juice here makes ours look real bad its that good. I hate runny eggs the thought of eating yoke makes me feel disgusted so the cook makes me some Haitian style eggs instead and they are actually good. I’m ready now we leave and go pick up Immortal Technique I salute him because he deserves such. After we go chill and I play some pool I’m not the best pool player but I do alright. We leave and go pick up Styles P he is blown away by how bad the conditions are and his emotions are sincere the eyes don’t lie his have a tear for his people I got respect for real brothers I respect Styles. We drive through the rubble the struggle and I ask Styles to look at people faces these people are making the best of a very bad situation and no body is complaining no mean stares etc I see strength which a lot of us {black people}lack in America. We come back to the mansion kick it with the owner he is cool as fuck an old white guy with swagger your favorite rapper would pay to have. There’s some chicks in bikinis running around one in particular is quite nice but I’m not here for that {I think}so I just chill and decide to go on the computer and Herbie Luv Bug comes through wow a legend I’m glad to meet him actually as Im typing this he’s at the table I’m at talking. Styles just left I’m assuming its a smoke break Immortal Technique is up stairs on computer I guess I’ll stop here and continue later tonite its 7:15 pm Haiti time.
9:51 Haiti time I’m sitting alone it seems the cars took off and forgot me so I’m watching Rush Hour 2 I’m hungry and debating going to sleep I think I’m going to miss the show.
9:57 Oh shit just realized the Lakers are playing the Celtics this is where I sign off.
10:30 Lakers are loosing Ron just shot a brick and I hear a horn its obviously here to pick me up so I guess I’m not going to miss the show I’m about to try some pizza wish me luck.
12:08 show is over it was dope everybody did they thing Haiti is love. There was NO police at a rap show amazing! Backstage its packed but its a memory that will be with me. I would expect suckers to be scared out here we sucker free.
1:10 am sitting down in restaurant with Styles & Immortal Herbie Love Bug etc. imma try some fried chicken and plantains. The food was good we kicked it on some deep shit Styles is way more intelligent then the average street dude and Immortal Technique is Immortal Technique so you know what to expect we go back to the crib and its lights out (at least for me).
Haiti: Day 3
I’m up got to go get some bottled water I was told not to drink tap water nor brush my teeth with it so the water dispenser in the hall is like champagne I see Styles P “What up my nigga” I go get my water do what I do and go the the edge of the mansion which is on a mountain top I just want to absorb the view which is majestic ok I absorbed it now I realize I lost my phone so I come back to the room can’t find it lucky for me my boy Jube says I got your phone when I knock on his door now that’s what I call relief. I’m hungry I guess I will go eat. Ate breakfast with Styles and Immortal Technique and we had interesting insightful conversation these brothers are sharp they have a lot of knowledge.
12:38 Driving to airport to drop off Styles and meet up with Wyclef.
2:00 We meet up with Wyclef this dude is like the peoples leader out here the people want him to be president I think he may be one of the most influential men in Haiti.
3:19 A march massive amounts of youth the young generation is the majority of Haiti even the mayor of Delmas who we met seemed to recognize the power of the youth.
4:43 About to eat some fish.
6:01 Just finished eating red snapper and rice it was good took long but it was good.
8:26 Just seen some models of the homes that they are building for people out here so they can move out of tents which is important because storm season nears and I can’t imagine being in a tent during a hurricane. As I write this there’s little babies and young children not too far from me they are orphans so Wyclef invited us in with him while he interacts with them. I’m tired its still hot as shit outside unlike in America where it cools off at night I feel sweaty but who am I too complain when two minutes away there are people with no showers/tubs/sinks every time they bathe its less then what we call bird baths. But they make it work these people have thick skin. Immortal Technique is holding a baby really enjoying himself I think he might pull a Brad/Angelina move. Seeing these children reminds me I have to call my daughter.I learned a lot today about politics and red tape did you know that Red Cross takes donations and spreads the funds out all over? Well there’s nothing wrong with that BUT if you want your money sent directly to Haiti find other options less then 15 percent of money they received went to Haiti it was distributed world wide so if you want your money sent directly to Haiti or any other place directly Red Cross isn’t for you but if you don’t care where in the world the money is sent and just want to help any people then you can use Red Cross I will personally put my money in peoples hands and in the hands of people that I know will put it into Haiti or wherever the place is I want to help.
10:10 I’m tired really wanna get out of this place I’m at been here for over two hours I don’t really know why but I guess there’s a logical reason I mean just because I can’t see a logical reason doesn’t mean there isn’t one right? Some white man bumps into me while I’m sitting down and a black guy that’s with him apologizes for him wow I immediately get up and give him the ” I will fuck you up look” and I give the black dude the thanks brother but you didn’t do it so you don’t have to apologize gesture. The little people in my head are debating on what I should do but if I wild out it will be an embarrassment for me my people and my culture so I decide I had enough I’m out I go outside and wait for my ride. We get in the cars come back to the spot I go to the room and do what I got to do kick it with Mario about the day and go to sleep.
Haiti: Day Four
I’m up last day here so I’m embracing my surroundings for the last morning of my trip Immortal Technique is up early as a mother fucker I hear a knock but I don’t answer because I don’t want to break my concentration I know its Immortal so as soon as I’m done I go to the area where he is and he’s on the computer. We are going to give out food today I don’t know how that’s going to turn out but I’m ready.
9:17 Driving to site where we will distribute food roads are not good for low riding vehicles and streets are dusty I had some white Air Jordan Spizikes I wanted to wear but nope I didn’t come out here to mess up those sneakers so I’m doing black sneakers if you come to Haiti bring expendable shoes if you think your all white air force ones stand a chance out here GOOD LUCK. Yesterday I saw people at an event with clean shoes on that right there told me they not walking around they stay in the car and get out at the hotel there’s no way they walk amongst the people with them clean shoes on they in the house simple math house + nigga= house nigga! I’m a hybrid I sleep in the house but I walk/work in the field I taste the food in the house and make sure the field workers taste what I taste the most prosperous wealth is knowledge of self its no wonder these people with nothing are more at peace then some celebrities who have taken there blessings for granted!
9:50 We at Yele Haiti about to go do what we said we going to do.
10:47 We just got back in the vehicle about to leave Yele Haiti I just helped load bags for people the bags consisted of soap,4 bottles of water,granola bars, tampons, toothpaste, sanitary wipes etc now we in the car waiting its a waiting game out there.
11:04 We moving finally we in a motorcade oh yeah the funny moment of the day is when the white guy from yesterday walks by and Immortal Technique bursts out laughing because he knows what happened but the white guy said hello I guess he’s off his high horse

11:37 We on way back to airport I just learned that one of the best organizations to send money to is doctorswithoutborders.org they give 90 percent to the people and you choose where you want the money sent
12:09 At airport dude wants to carry my bag just tried to pimp me said he wanted $10 for carrying my one carry on bag lol I tell him “do you know what I just did for Haiti ” we both laugh we settle at $5. The walk from my bed room to my daughters room may have been longer then the distance he carried my bag but the funniest thing is it was him and his two mans and I only had one bag I tell his mans “get the fuck out of here ” in the friendliest way I can think of and proceed through metal detector I respect hustle just not when its on me!
12:20 Just went through customs now another round of metal detectors and I’m on my way
12:30 I go through metal detectors nothing rings but I still get searched ok I have no problem with that.My bag is now being searched I have no problem with that but when this so called brother tries to take my lotion and sun screen which are both 3oz (the required sizes) I have a problem with that! The lotion cost me little to nothing the sunscreen cost money BUT not enough to set me back. The thing I have a problem with is when I asked why are you taking my stuff {which I peeped him admiring}his response was “two” as if it was because there was two I immediately spoke to his man who spoke english and he said it needed to be in a zip lock which proves the other nigga was grimey because I had a ziplock in my bag and I saw him pick my ziplock up when he searched my bag! I told his man “Yo there’s a ziplock in the bag why didn’t he just tell me to put it in the ziplock!? His man understood gave me a slight smile and said “don’t worry” after I put my stuff in my zip lock {fuck that}Parrish {not from EPMD} see’s this and I tell him if the dude wanted my lotion and shit all he had to do was ask! I knew some shit was up when the guy ask me did I have perfume in other words he likes taking peoples cologne but mine was in the ziplock so he decides I will take the lotion and sunscreen!So remember when leaving Haiti make sure your things are in a ziplock and leave you best perfumes at home cause duke will take it if it smells good. Yo I just been in the ghettos of Haiti been around young wild brothers and nobody tried to rob me but a guy at an airport wants to take my cologne what’s the world coming to!
1:46 In my seat just had fried chicken and french fries shit was good we about to take off so my Haiti trip is now almost officially over! In hindsight I met a white dude that I really like and one that pissed me off and I met black dudes that are cool and one who pissed me off! I really appreciate what I have even though I always appreciated things I respect the people of Haiti and it saddens me how people made a business of exploiting other peoples pain but have no fear there are still some good people out here in the world!Japan rebuilt after being bombed the Jewish people rebuilt after the Holocaust they had help from outside but most importantly they helped each other!
